Parks & Rec offers ‘Murder on South St.,’ dinner theater

Davidson Parks & Recreation is now accepting registration for a variety of programs in the next couple of months from a Feb. 10 lecture called “Murder on South Street” co-hosted with Davidson Historical Society to a March 16 mystery dinner theater presentation by About Town Tours at historic Beaver Dam. There’s also a Seagrove Pottery road trip, a watercolor class with instructor Jim Kerr, and cooking and writing classes.

ADULT PROGRAMS

Murder on South Street with David Boraks – In February 1914, citizens throughout Mecklenburg County were shocked at news of a murder on South Street in Davidson. Monroe Jetton, the town druggist, was accused of shooting his friend, Dr. W.H. Wooten, “in a fit of jealousy” over the doctor’s alleged relationship with Mr. Jetton’s wife, or, as news accounts later described her, his “bride of one year.” The “distressing affair” was front-page news in the Charlotte Observer and the subject of whispering in town for decades. DavidsonNews.net editor David Boraks been researching the case and will tell the story and talk about buildings in town connected to the case, all of which remain. Mystery Dinner Theater – Mystery Dinner Theater comes to Davidson! Are you looking for a good time that requires a bit of investigative inquiry and an appetite? Then you’ll need to join the Town of Davidson Parks and Recreation department, About Town Tours and Armin’s Catering as they put on Mystery Dinner Theater “Murder Most Green” at the historic Beaver Dam House. Enjoy delicious appetizers, dinner buffet and dessert while being entertained by the mystery dinner theater performance.

“Murder Most Green”. This special St. Patrick’s Day murder mystery takes place in the City of Blarney. You are invited to a party to honor Patrick Flaherty, owner of Flaherty’s True Green Plant Nursery. Flaherty died the last night after a get-together that celebrated the nursery’s centennial year. Instead of having a party, you will be attending his wake. You’re invited to become investigators and help the Detective figure out “WHODUNIT!”

Menu includes: Deliciously prepared hor d’oevres, corned beef, parsley potatoes, green beans and desert. Cash bar available.

ADULT TRIPS

Seagrove Pottery – Join us on a trip to visit one of the largest communities of potters with the longest continual history of pottery making in the U.S. There are more than 100 potters who offer pottery and ceramic art. We will stop for lunch and shop a variety of potters in the area. Please let us know if there is a particular artist you are interesting in seeing on the trip. We may even be able to see a demonstration. We will eat lunch at Jugtown Cafe. Fee includes trip to Seagrove.

CLASSES & LECTURES

Davidson Senior Scholars – The Davidson Senior Scholars was formed to provide programs that stimulate continual intellectual and cultural growth. The general format of the meetings is that of lecture followed by question and answer. The speakers are experts in their fields and may include Davidson college professors, local physicians, and business professionals. Programs are free. Check www.d-recs.org for an updated listing of our speakers. Typically meets the third Wednesday of each month from 1-2:30pm, though the day and time can change.

Watercolor with Jim Kerr – The goal of this course is to provide students with a roadmap to successful watercolor painting which will include: landscapes, seascapes, still life and portraits. Learn various techniques and applications.

“Eat Your Heart Out! – Valentine’s Day Edition

Wooden Stone Gallery has partnered with the Town of Davidson to offer a series of hands-on cooking classes with a nod to local farmers’ markets. Hands-on cooking classes are just that – you do the cooking. Whether a beginner or a seasoned pro, you will have lots of fun cooking with us! During the 2 1/2 hour classes, you will prepare 5 to 6 dishes, then sit down and enjoy your meal with a glass of wine. Menus and fees can be found at www.d-Recs.org. Golden and Crimson Beet Salad with Oranges, Fennel, and Feta; Pork Loin with Figs and Port Sauce; Filet Mignon with Bordelaise Sauce; Pan-Roasted Chicken Breasts with Orange-Brandy Sauce; Truffled Mashed Potatoes; Molten Chocolate Cake with Caramel Filling. Pre-registration is required Thursday before class. Space is limited.

Memoir: Writing Your Story with Gilda Morina Syverson – We all have stories to tell! This four week course is about writing down your personal or family stories for yourself and future generations. Document your joys and struggles. Write the chapter(s) of your life that you don’t want forgotten. You will begin journaling with prompts given by your instructor. One or more of your entries will be lifted and expanded. You may bring a battery-run laptop, but a journal and fast-writing pen is required!

Instructor: Gilda Morina Syverson has been teaching memoir writing classes and workshops at Queens University for over 12 years. She has taught in the Creative Arts for over 40 years and was a 2010 Novello Literary Award Finalist for her memoir, Finding Bottom, an Italian-American Woman’s Journey to the Old Country. Her award-winning family stories and poems have appeared in literary journals, magazines and anthologies in the United States and Canada. Her poetry books Facing the Dragon and In This Dream Everything Remains Inside were published by Main Street Rag Publishing Company.

YOUTH ENRICHMENT

Babysitter Training
 – This American Red Cross course has a unique interactive, educational format that tasks youth, ages 11-15 years of age, with activities such as identifying safety problems around the house and yard and selecting age-appropriate toys and games for children in their care. Participants learn by doing. This format, along with the course video and an enthusiastic instructor, keeps the interest of the babysitters and provides a meaningful classroom experience. Please make sure to pack a lunch to bring with you.

After School – Scrumptious Cooking Class for Kids – This program is designed to help your child understand the importance of nutrition; boost their self-esteem, while learning to eat new foods. We will explore making simple, kid approved snacks. Your child will
enjoy their creations at the end of each class and take one home for show-and-tell to the family. Recipes will be included. The class will be hands on so an old shirt from Mom or Dad will help keep school clothes clean. We must know of allergies at registration time and we can accommodate them.
