this week buttonOur week is filled with civic events, including Monday’s Cornelius Town Board meeting and Tuesday’s election; symphony concerts at Davidson College, Bailey Middle School and the Charlotte Symphony Lollipops series; and the annual meeting and nature festival of the Davidson Lands Conservancy at Abersham Park Sunday. Davidson College’s men’s basketball team opens the 2012-13 season Friday at home against Emory. A Marketplace day is planned Saturday at Kadi Fit in Cornelius, and there’s a Fall Festival at Jetton Village in Cornelius. This weekend also brings the annual Rural Sheepdog Trials and Dog Festival. Angels of ’97 golf tourney, 1 p.m., Pine Island Golf Course, Charlotte – Angels of ’97 hosts its ninth annual “Puttin’ Fore a Purpose” golf tournament, raising money for area high school seniors. Angels of ’97 was formed in 1997 to honor five students who died before graduation. Since then it has given more than $450,000 in scholarships. McGuire plant siren tests, 8am to 4pm – Emergency sirens around McGuire Nuclear Station will be sounding Wednesday, Nov. 7, to test an upgrade to the siren system. This test is in addition to the plant’s normal quarterly siren tests. All sirens within a 10-mile radius of McGuire Nuclear Station, located Mecklenburg, Gaston, Lincoln, Iredell and Catawba counties, will sound for approximately one minute, and the test may occur more than once. Hough vs. Watauga soccer playoff , 6pm, W.A. Hough High School, 12420 Bailey Road, Cornelius – Hough hosts Watauga in the 3rd round of the NCHSAA state boys’ soccer playoffs. Tickets $6.

Lunch with chef Deborah Madison, 11am, Davidson College Vail Commons Dining Hall – Farm-to-table chef Deborah Madison coordinates a meal and speaks to diners. Entrees will include braised chicken with dried fruit and shallots, savory goat cheese tart with leeks and chickpeas, and greens with Moroccan spices—all served with a side of tri-color quinoa served pilaf style. Madison will also serve “soups for the soul,” including red lentil with turmeric, rice and lime, winter squash with lemon grass andcoconut milk and smoky tomato bisque. Hurricane Sandy relief concert, 1-6pm, The Birdsnest, 102 B S. Hike to Whale Rock and mill ruins, 4 p.m., Abersham Park, Grey and Shearer roads, Davidson – Davidson Historical Society and Davidson Lands Conservancy present a walking tour to the Rocky River Mill ruins and the “Whale Rock” outcropping. This walk will combine history with a nature walk on rural land. Meet at 3:45 pm at Abersham Park, at Grey and Shearer roads. The ruin and rural land is in the nearby Runneymede neighborhood and we will caravan to the trailhead. The walk will begin at 4. Columnist David Brooks, 8pm, Davidson College Duke Family Performance Hall – New York Times columnist David Brooks speaks on “What It Means: The 2012 Election and the Future of America.” Brooks has been an opinion columnist with the Times since 2003 and is a commentator on The PBS Newshour.
